PROJECT: Pisay 85 Cares Sound Mind Matters
It is tradition that jubilarian alumni of Philippine Science High School implement pay-back projects for their alma mater. For Pisay85 silver anniversary, we, together with our sponsor, the Uytengsu Foundation, implemented an energy efficiency project in the Main Campus. We replaced fluorescent lamps with LED lamps in the Administration Building, and we installed a grid-tied 2kW solar system to power the building. For our 30th year, with funding support from Ayala Foundation, we implemented a 10kW solar project on the roof of the Advanced Science and Technology Building (ASTB) in the Diliman Campus, saving the campus some PhP200,000 of electric bills. We also donated electrical and electronic equipment to the Research Department, to support data gathering for the research projects of the students.
In 2020, Philippine Science High School Batch 1985 celebrated our 35th year of graduation from the premiere science high school in the country. Amidst the corona-virus pandemic, families found themselves adapting to the changes in daily life caused by the pandemic. Most parents or families are faced with helping each other adjust to the new normal. Parents are trying to keep their children occupied, keeping up with schoolwork, helping their children understand what is happening, trying to help them feel safe and dealing with the effects of social distancing and isolation. Family members, both young and old, have to deal with loss, the untimely passing of love ones and friends.
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major effect on our lives. Children are facing challenges that can be stressful, overwhelming, and cause strong emotions. Public health protocols, such as social distancing, are necessary to reduce the spread of COVID-19, but they can make both adults and children, feel isolated and lonely and can increase stress and anxiety. Learning to cope with stress in a healthy way will make children more resilient.
Thus was born SOUND MIND MATTERS, a mental health awareness advocacy. Our project foundation is the definition of the World Health Organization: Mental health is "a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community."
We aim to remove the stigma attached to the word "mental health" as we teach the students, teachers, staff and even parents and families that mental health, much like our physical health, is necessary in our development as a human being, necessary in our daily activities, necessary in our relationships.
